Leave of Absence Policy If the enrollment is temporarily interrupted for a Leave of Absence (LOA), the student will return to school in the same progress status they had prior to the leave of absence. Hours elapsed during a LOA will have no effect on progress. A LOA will extend the student’s contract period and the maximum time frame by the same number of days taken in the LOA. A student will not be assessed for any additional charges because of a requested LOA. The student must follow the institution’s policy when requesting a LOA. Students shall complete the school’s Leave of Absence Request Form and must include the reason for the LOA. An addendum to the enrollment agreement indicating the changes to the contract period must be signed by all parties. All LOA requests must be made in advance. The institution may grant a LOA to a student who did not provide the request prior to the LOA due to unforeseen circumstances if: a) the institution documents the reason for its decision; b) the institution collects the request from the student at later date but during the LOA; and c) the institution establishes the start date of the approved LOA as the first date the student was unable to attend. The school may grant a LOA for a minimum period of fourteen (14) days and a maximum of thirty (30) days at a time during a students’ enrollment. LOAs may be allowed for emergencies, medical reasons for student or immediate family member under their care, special circumstances, or unless pre-agreed on at time of enrollment and noted in student’s Enrollment Agreement Addendum. LOAs may be extended at the discretion of the school. The student may re-enter at the same point of advancement previously attained prior to his/her LOA. In certain instances, a leave may be taken in increments not to exceed a total of one hundred and eighty (180) days in any 12-month period without prejudice, meaning without financial penalty and without damaging a student’s academic standing with the school. A student granted a LOA in accordance with the institution’s policy is not considered to have withdrawn and a refund calculation will not be required at that time. Students are withdrawn for taking an unapproved LOA or not returning by the expiration date of an approved LOA and the withdrawal date for the purposes of calculating a refund will be the student’s last date of attendance.
